Amalgamation Concert for the Arts.

After the Hey Joe’s show in Cleveland, MS a couple weeks ago, a young man by the name of Weejy video interviewed Amalgamation for the new Cleveland arts and entertainment newsletter “The Skinny.” Keep Cleveland Boring.

Amalgamation played at Proud Larry’s in Oxford, MS last week.  Check out the video above and hang out for 8 mins with the guys in the green room before the show.

Killer Gig Weekend: Hello 2011

Amalgamation is back in business!  The guys got together over the weekend to play the first gigs of the New Year in Cleveland and Jackson, MS.

Friday night the band set the lights low and serenaded an attentive audience at Hey Joe’s Records and Cafe in Cleveland, MS. Half-way through the set saxophonist Ryan Betz announced that they had a sweet surprise for everyone. Monday was Valentines Day and Betz explained that a late Valentines gift was better than none. Bassist Chris Hartfield stepped off the stage to pass out Valentine cards signed by the band (like the ones from elementary school).  But that wasn’t all.  Six of the cards had the phone numbers of guitarist Matthew Wood and drummer Coday Anthony. (Along with a note asking for either lunch or a hot date!)  All the people who got a number with their card were asked to come to the front of the stage where yet another prize awaited them.  As they assembled, Wood leaned behind his amp to reveal a 6-pack of Smirinoff ICE.  Yes, those 6 lucky fans got Iced!  It was a good laugh as everyone got down on one knee to enjoy their treat.  After the gift exchange, Amalgamation started the second set with more lively tunes to keep up with the now animated audience.  Following the show, the guys were interviewed for the Keep Cleveland Boring YouTube channel as part of a video series for the newly formed Cleveland entertainment newsletter The Skinny, a publication of Keep Cleveland Boring.  Check it out!

Then on Saturday Amalgamation joined forces with New Orleans, LA band E Company at The Red Room at Hal and Mals in Jackson, MS.  Man-o-man, what a tight, thick, soulful, funky, rock’n night!  The gig marked the first time the two groups had performed together. With similar instrumentation (sax, bass, drums, keys, guitar), but with different vibes (jazz/rock vs. jazz/soul/funk) the two bands complemented each other well.  E Company started the show with their unique brand of heavy soul.  Two members of the band are brothers as well as Jackson natives.  The crowd they drew they also knew and their fans came prepared to jam, bringing great energy.  Amalgamation followed E Company’s grove’n set and brought on the rock.  Keeping the energy high, the crowd remained engaged well into the night.  When it was all over everyone agreed that the show killed!  It was also agreed that this would not be the last time the two bands come together to perform. Expect to see more gigs featuring Amalgamation and E Company in the very near future.

In the meantime, catch Amalgamation this Wednesday, February 23 at Proud Larry’s in Oxford, MS w/guest drummer Greg Cobb.

Amalgamation is sharing the Hal and Mal’s stage with E Company, a groove’n, youthful, enthusiastic, and as they say “vibe’n” band from New Orleans. With similar instrumentation and energy, the bands are going to compliment each other well.  It’s going to be one hell of good night to hear some jams!
